Soms kun je jezelf tegenhouden door te denken dat iets moeilijk of onmogelijk is, zelf heb ik dit ervaren met hardlopen. Vorige week liep ik mijn eerste lange afstandsloop, de Singelloop in Utrecht; 10 kilometers door de Utrechts binnenstad. Al zeker 2 jaar stond deze loop op mijn lijstje van uitdagingen. 10 kilometer leek me namelijk een enorme prestatie, zeker omdat ik mezelf niet als een hardloper zie.

De afgelopen 3 maanden heb ik rustig aan getraind voor de loop en vorige week zondag heb ik de 10 kilometer in 48:06 minuten gelopen. Als ik de renners om me heen mag geloven een erg mooie tijd (zelf had ik geen idee want ik had alleen mezelf als referentie). Een mooie prestatie waar ik trots op ben. De 10 kilometer uitdaging is overwonnen!

Gisteren had ik het met een vriend over hardlopen, hij was namelijk aan het trainen voor een halve marathon. Hij vertelde dat ie 2 rondjes had, een klein rondje van 10 kilometer en een grotere van 18. “WTF!”, dacht ik, “mijn ultieme uitdaging is voor hem een ‘klein rondje'”. Dit veranderde mijn blik op rennen toch wel enigszins.

Vandaag heb ik voor het eerst sinds de Singelloop weer een rondje gerend, gewoon omdat het lekker is. Tijdens het rennen heb ik de mindset van mijn vriend overgenomen en heb ik een klein rondje van 10 kilometer gerend. Het ging vrijwel moeiteloos! Nou ja, in ieder geval veel makkelijker dan de Singelloop een week eerder. De 10 kilometer is in mijn hoofd gewoon geen barriere meer, maar iets dat ik gewoon kan. Ik denk zelfs dat ik die halve marathon nu ook uit zou kunnen lopen als het moest. Misschien zelfs wel een hele (hoewel mijn tijd niet al te denderend zal zijn).
Heel bizar dat dingen je een stuk makkelijker af kunnen gaan als je je mindset verandert.

    Klopt, grenzen verleggen heet dat. Als ik nu zeg dat ik ooit een ultra loper heb begeleid als hij in Nederland was voor een wedstrijd die elke dag een marathon trainde (no joking, 40-45 kilometer was zijn kleine rondje, elke avond)…. is dat motiverend of demotiverend? 

    FYI: ultralopers zijn gek, dat zijn dus 24 uur of 48 uurslopers (aan een stuk). De ‘Winschoter Run’ (100km) was voor hem te kort, dan kwam hij net in zijn ritme.

    Voor mij was de les vooral dat ik zelf de barierre had opgelegd door de 10 km groter te maken dan ie eigelijk was. 40 km als klein rondje klinkt voor mij nu best aannemelijk. Gewoon gaan en goed op je lichaam letten. Het nare van lange afstanden is dat ze echter wel erg lang duren om te lopen. Ik ga toch geen 4 uur rennen voor de lol 🙂

    Zit nu wel een beetje te dubben om toch maar eens die marathon te lopen dan, kan ik die ook weer wegstrepen van het lijstje …
