Het is raar hoe je gehecht kan raken aan materiële dingen. En dan bedoel ik niet die ring van je overleden opa, of het lepeltje waarmee je gevoerd werd als baby. Nee, ik heb het over dagelijkse gebruiksvoorwerpen zoals mijn feloranje fiets. Na 5 sportieve jaren realiseer ik het me eindelijk en nu is het te laat, want helaas, mijn fiets is total löss.

Im Memorium

De dag voordat we op vakantie gingen werd ik op een kruising aangereden door een auto. Ik wilde rechtdoor, hij rechtsaf. Gelukkig zag ik hem aankomen en had ik slechts een schram, maar mijn mooie oranje omafiets was schots en scheef en niet meer te repareren.
Geen probleem dacht ik, ik koop wel weer een nieuwe, deze oranje ros was namelijk al de derde op rij. Maar nu blijkt dat de fietsenfabriek geen oranje fietsen meer maakt en zijn ze nergens meer te koop.
Daarom deze afscheidsrede voor mijn geliefde feloranje omafiets.

De eerste aankoop

Het was denk ik 2005 of 2006 dat ik mijn eerste oranje omafiets kocht. Ik was student af, toe aan een nieuwe fiets en ik vond het mijn plicht om minstens 1 nieuwe fiets aan het Utrechtse ecosysteem toe te voegen. In een fietsenwinkel zag ik hem slaan en ik was direct verkocht, de fiets was rond de €200 en zag er degelijk uit. Daarnaast leek het me ook een goed idee omdat hij lekker op zou vallen en zo wellicht iets minder vatbaar zou zijn voor diefstal.

Geliefd bij dieven

Niets bleek minder waar, oranje fietsen worden net zo hard gestolen als normaal gekleurde. De eerste keer dat mijn oranje fiets werd gestolen woonde ik nog in Lunetten. Erg vervelend natuurlijk, maar zo gaat dat in de grote stad. Weer terug naar de fietsenwinkel voor een nieuwe fiets. Helaas werd deze een 3tal maanden later op precies dezelfde plek ook gestolen terwijl hij toch echt goed zat vastgeketend.
3 maal is echter scheepsrecht en deze keer sloot ik dan ook een fietsverzekering af bij oranje omafiets nummer 3. Zoals het gaat met verzekeringen werd deze fiets dus niet gestolen tijdens de looptijd van de verzekering.

Nee, omafiets nummer 3 werd later gestolen toen de verzekering verlopen was. Ik woonde inmiddels in Kanaleneiland en toen ik op een woensdagochtend wilde wegfietsen was mijn fiets foetsie.
Ik heb nog even de buurt rondgelopen, maar ik vond geen spoor van mijn ros. ’s Avonds, toen Rian terugkwam van haar werk, fietste ze de straat in en zag één van de jongens in de straat vrolijk rondjes fietsen op mijn oranje fiets! De brutaliteit!
Ik snel naar beneden, maar van de schavuit was niets meer te bekennen. Gelukkig zal ik bij een tweede ronde iets oranjes door een schutting heen. Mijn fiets stond bij de buurjongen in de tuin! Ik snel de politie gebeld die mij weer herenigde met mijn fiets. Eind goed al goed.

Baken in de chaos

Zo’n oranje omafiets is echt een baken in de chaos van deze wereld. Niet alleen valt hij op als hij gestolen is door je buurjongen, nee, ook tussen al die duizenden fietsen op het Centraal Station pik ik hem er feilloos tussenuit. En niet alleen ik gebruik de oranje kleur om me te oriënteren, ook vrienden die op bezoek komen koersen op het oranje. De volgen de baken zelfs zo feilloos dat ze ergens anders aanbelden toen ik mijn fiets per ongeluk bij de buren had gestald.

Liefde voor een fiets

Dat niet alleen ik gek was op mijn oranje fiets blijkt wel uit dit briefje dat ik vond op mijn fiets. Iedereen hield van mijn oranje omafiets!
